Juan José Hernández

Juan José Hernández, born in Tucumán in 1931, passed away on last March 21, in Buenos Aires.
Author of works such as "Negada Permanencia/La siesta y la Naranja" (1952), "Claridad vencida" (1957) and "Otro verano" (1966), the novel "La ciudad de los sueños" (1971) and the short stories book "Así es mamá" (1997), his literature moves among the memories of his native land and his public life in Buenos Aires, and his relationship with Sur magazine writers, where his published his first tales. Once settled down in Buenos Aires and begun his university studies, he knew José Bianco, Alejandra Pizarnik and Silvina Ocampo, who encouraged him to write down those stories he lived in his province. That is how tales as "La viuda" or "El disfraz" have surprised the readers of the magazine managed by Victoria Ocampo.
"When I was a kid, people from the province used to live better than now, in huge houses with two or three yards and back gardens with fruit trees and a henhouse", he said once.
Translating was another of Hernández passions. He has translated Tennessee Williams and Paul Verlaine's poetry. In 1961, after he had wrote his first poetry books, he started working at La Prensa newspaper and, four years later, he published his short story book "El inocente" (Premio Municipal de Narrativa).
"I have started writing tales without stopping writing poetry. That has given me the possibility to solve a number of things that were impossible to do through poetry. Characters, stories and things that usually have nothing to do with poetry".
